Researchers evaluated Nicknamed the “suicide disease”, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), known now as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is the most painful condition a human being can experience. Ranking higher on the pain scale than the amputation of a limb or natural childbirth, this condition greatly affects the quality of life for those diagnosed. With no cure and treatments that only mask the pain, many patients are left to suffer, with many losing their ability to work or enjoy the simple things of everyday life. But HBOT, or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, can help reduce or eliminate RSD/CRPS pain, as well as heal the body.

You Aren’t Limited by Traditional Treatment Options – HBOT Can Help!

If you or a loved one suffers from RSD/CRPS, you know how difficult living with the pain can be. You may be at your wits end after finding no relief from the standard treatment options offered. We are here to let you know that there is another option that is finding great success in the treatment of RSD/CRPS, with many patients experiencing a significant reduction in pain and swelling, as well as increased range of motion, returned function of the affected limb, and increased quality of life.

The Best Kept Medical Secret!!

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is a non-invasive medical treatment option that floods the body with 100 percent oxygen at increased air pressure. The first documented use dates back to 1662, and it has been used since then in the treatment of a variety of conditions. It is one of the best kept medical secrets out there!

Scientists and physicians are only now beginning to explore the effects of HBOT on a variety of conditions and they are finding it offers many more benefits than originally believed. One condition showing great results to hyperbaric oxygen is RSD/CRPS. Dr. Spiegel stumbled on HBOT for RSD/CRPS when treating patients for other conditions. These patients reported that not only did the HBOT help the condition that they were there for, but that noticed a reduction in their RSD/CRPS symptoms.

Studies Show That HBOT Works for RSD/CRPS Pain

To give you an idea of just how HBOT can help those suffering from RSD/CRPS, we can look at a 2004 study that included 71 patients with RSD/CRPS of the arm. Of the patients, 37 were in the HBOT group while the remaining 34 were in a control group. None of the patients had undergone any prior treatments for RSD/CRPS before entering the study. During the study, participants received 500mg of paracetamol, or acetaminophen, three times a day. Both groups attended 15 90-minute sessions, with the HBOT group having 100 percent oxygen and the control group having normal air, which is 21 percent. Researchers evaluated each patient at the beginning of the study, after the 15 treatments, and again 45 days after completion of the treatments.

What did the results show? Researchers evaluated patients on the pain scale, wrist range of motion, and edema, or swelling. Patients in the HBOT group saw a significant pain scale decrease. Those in the control group saw minimal change. Range of motion also greatly increased while swelling greatly decreased. They concluded that significant healing was the result of the increased oxygenation in the tissues.

A 2015 case study looked at a 41-year-old man with CRPS of the left foot. Before beginning treatment, the patient reported a pain score of 7-8/10 at the worst, with the average being 6/10. The patient kept a pain diary throughout the 3-week, 15 session treatment with HBOT. After just the first treatment, the patient’s average score was 5.1. But his pain score dropped to 3.2 at the end of the 15 treatments. At a one-month follow-up, the patient reported his pain level was down to 2/10. For the first time in over a year, he finally was able to return to work! At a 6-month follow-up, the man reported intermittent pain in his ankle registering a 3/10. However, he was still working full-time as a firefighter and able to jog several times a week!
